The award recognises the sale of the FERRI-PRO technology to global food giant Nestlé. The patented technology targeting iron deficiency was developed by Massey University researchers at the Riddet Institute. Massey Ventures was also a finalist in the Best New Invention category for the patented Metal Organic Framework for Gas Adsorption. The technology aims to revolutionise the carbon-capture industry and support global decarbonisation efforts in the fight against climate change.

"It's wonderful to see New Zealand-based commercialisation offices, like Massey Ventures, being recognised for the hard work and value they create" says Massey Ventures CEO, Mark Cleaver. "It’s a credit to not only the Massey Ventures team, but also the researchers and technologies behind these deals who make these outcomes possible. It shows that commercialisation can be done in New Zealand with great success, so hopefully it inspires others to pursue commercialisation."

About the deal

In Pakistan, where one in two children are iron deficient, global food giant Nestlé announced the launch of BUNYAD IRON+, an affordable dairy-based drink fortified with a new source of iron in 2022. The unique iron source has three times greater absorption than alternative sources. The FERRI-PRO technology, originally developed by the Riddet Institute at Massey University, was acquired by Nestlé in December 2018. The deal represents the single biggest commercial deal to emerge from the University, both in terms of commercial impact and societal benefits.
